The saying used to be, “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.”

Frankly, you don’t even have to be paying attention anymore. It’s more like “If you’re surprised, you’re not paying attention.”

Apparently though a destroyed earth is all part of getting to “The Last Days” which is what Bush and much of his followers are hoping for, according to one of them (my cousin).

This cousin of mine was recently “born again” – like in the last few years (let me tell you about his soulless wedding in October, eeesh), and at first, it was almost like he couldn’t wait to be brainwashed.

Now, I am an atheist, but I am not against all religion or all theists at all. And I have read the bible (it’s actually partly what attributed to my realizing how fucked up god is and eventually led me to realizing, gleefully, he doesn’t exist), so I used to quiz my cousin about it – like did he believe in stoning to death adulterers, atheists, and rebellious children, having sex with or selling off one’s daughters (ah, Job), dashing into the rocks the heads of babies (Isaiah)**, you know, that sort of thing – and, of course, he’d deny any of it was in the bible (yeah, poor slob hadn’t read the fine print to the club he was joining). But what was most fun was when I’d ask him things he couldn’t just look up – like if he believed in dinosaurs (since, he didn’t believe in evolution, etc) -and he’d say “I don’t know. I’ll have to ask my pastor.”

dear…god… it was like he was made to be in a cult. maybe evolution is false and we were all put here with a purpose.

right.

Now, I know lots of people who don’t like to think – who feel anything that requires critical thought is “controversial” and not for someone “like them” to be “bothered with”. But they do do it – just in the privacy of their own head. But for someone to actually believe that logic is evil (literally) and takes you further from “god” — now that’s just scary, folks. Because it changes from someone who doesn’t want to be bothered with thinking, to someone who doesn’t want YOU to think either.

**Most thinking Christians don’t take the bible literally (at least not all the time). It causes them other problems, but that’s another topic. Many born-agains also don’t realize their lovely leaders don’t just take the bible literally but want to implement its laws here on earth. It may sound unrealistic, but these f*ckers are serious and have already accomplished more than you might think.

And for those of you who are fundamentalist bigots, who look at the bits about Isaiah and concubines and Job and say, “well, that was the Old Testament. Jesus was in the New Testament.” – if you believe that, and only want to take half the bible literally, then I guess we can throw out the Ten Commandments (all of which carry the death penalty) since they’re in the OT, huh? Yeah, didn’t think you’d go for that one. You can’t have the New without the Old.
